NLCabs: Amsterdam Taxi Drivers Launch Their Own Ride-Hailing Brand

NLCabs brought Amsterdam taxi drivers together under their own brand, with a passenger app, driver app and dispatch on the eCabs Technologies platform. The platform was configured around the cooperative’s model and went live in 2026; the work on growth continues together.

NLCabs brings Amsterdam taxi drivers together under one locally owned brand, with its own passenger app, driver app and dispatch. The platform underneath it is eCabs Technologies, configured around the way the cooperative wants to work rather than the other way round.

The challenge: one brand for an established driver network

The Dutch private-hire market is crowded. Local taxi operators work alongside international platforms, and passengers expect to book, track and pay in an app.

The NLCabs initiators wanted Amsterdam drivers to work under a brand of their own, on terms they set themselves. Nearly 1,300 drivers had signed up by the public launch, according to reports in the Dutch press.

A passenger app on its own would not have been enough. Running a mobility service means dispatch, driver operations, pricing, payments, customer service and reporting all working together. Building and maintaining that from scratch would have taken years and a development team. NLCabs chose to start from an established platform instead.

The approach: an established platform, configured around the operator

The work focused on configuring the eCabs Technologies platform to NLCabs’ operational and commercial model, not on custom development. Working with the NLCabs team, eCabs Technologies supported onboarding, platform configuration, testing and launch preparation. The platform was ready in June 2026, and NLCabs launched publicly in Amsterdam in September 2026.

What the platform covers

A passenger app in the NLCabs brand. Riders book, follow their journey and deal directly with their local operator.

A driver app. It supports drivers through the whole trip, from receiving a request to completing the journey.

Dispatch and management portal. The team manages bookings, monitors operations and oversees driver activity day to day.

Pricing and commercial settings. Pricing rules and commercial terms are configured for the Dutch market and NLCabs’ own model.

Reporting. Operational data and reports help the team make informed decisions as the service grows.

Cloud infrastructure that scales. More drivers, more demand and new requirements can be added without rebuilding the platform.

Automatic surge pricing, proven in Malta

Demand and driver availability change through the day, and pricing has to keep up. NLCabs has access to the same automatic surge pricing that eCabs uses for its own taxi operation in Malta, where it competes directly with international ride-hailing platforms.

Fares adjust to demand and available drivers, within limits the operator sets. Instead of watching the market and changing prices by hand, the team defines the rules once:

  • Demand-responsive pricing that follows demand and driver availability
  • Configurable thresholds set around local conditions and commercial goals
  • Operational alerts when market conditions need attention
  • Less manual work for the dispatch team

How and when NLCabs uses surge pricing is the operator’s own commercial decision.

After go-live: working alongside the team

Launching the technology is one milestone. Winning passengers, keeping drivers engaged and building a sustainable operation take longer, and that work is ongoing.

eCabs Technologies continues to work with NLCabs in this early growth phase: sharing operational experience from running taxi services, giving technical guidance and developing the platform with the team. NLCabs keeps control of its brand, its customer relationships and its commercial direction.

What other operators can take from NLCabs

Local operators can run their own digital brand. Competing with international platforms does not mean adopting their brand or giving up the customer relationship.

The technology should fit the operating model. Cooperatives, independent fleets and dispatch centres work differently, and the platform needs to adapt to each.

Local knowledge and technology work together. NLCabs brings its knowledge of the Dutch market and its driver network. eCabs Technologies brings the platform and the experience of running taxi operations.

Go-live is the start, not the finish. Customer adoption, driver engagement and continuous improvement decide what happens next.
