Alex Agius Saliba Visits eCabs in St Julian’s

On 16 October, Alex Agius Saliba, Member of the European Parliament and Deputy Leader of the Labour Party, visited the eCabs head office in St Julian’s, together with Ramona Attard, Member of Parliament.
The visit took in the operations centre that runs the eCabs taxi service in Malta around the clock, and the eCabs Technologies team that develops the platform taxi operators use in other countries.
A control room run by people, around the clock
The visitors saw how bookings are handled live, day and night, by a team rather than a chatbot. When eCabs started, every ride was booked by phone. Today, ONE News reports, phone bookings account for only around 10 to 15 per cent of rides, with the rest coming through the app.

From a local service to technology used abroad
Speaking to ONE News, Matthew Bezzina, founder and CEO of eCabs Technologies, explained that the company grew out of the need to keep investing in technology to compete in Malta, and that the same technology turned out to be needed by taxi operators in other countries and cities.
Alex Agius Saliba described the platform as the work of a Maltese team that started with just two cars, and said its use by operators abroad, including in South America, shows what Maltese workers and investors can achieve when they grow locally and then take on foreign markets.
